In this document, Claude Teague (Director of Research and Development for the R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company) says that pot, tranquilizers, alcohol and psychotropic drugs are competitive products to cigarettes, and expresses concern that these drugs could erode their cigarette market.
This insight helps us understand why tobacco companies opt to own liquor companies (e.g., Philip Morris owns Miller Beer).

QUOTES
(from page four of the document):
4. Changing social values may add to manufacturing costs and reduce the market for cigarettes:
- Social acceptance of smoking will continue to decline.
- Methods may evolve for relatively painless methods for stopping smoking.
- Competitive products, such as alcohol, pot, tranquilizers and the new generation of psychotropic drugs may decrease the market for cigarettes.
