As any student of the tobacco industry knows, the industry's viewpoint is that the discomfort people feel in a room full of tobacco smoke is largely caused by anything (and everything) other than the smoke. Given that premise, the industry embarked on finding other odiferous elements in indoor air, so they could point the finger at those.

In this mostly boring document, I found this amusing paragraph. In addition to being just plain silly, it indicates the desperation of an industry under siege.

QUOTES
(From page 4 of the document):

INBIFO - Body Odour and Staleness of Air - Objective: To relate staleness of indoor air to human gaseous metabolic products other than carbon dioxide. Status: A list of odoriferous compounds, emitted by humans and not obviously present in tobacco smoke, has been prepared from a literature search. These are being investigated for the amount emitted by humans, any trace quantities in tobacco smoke and their odour detection thresholds. The range of measurement techniques for such compounds has also been discussed.

(oh, and the following quote, from page 14, wins a nomination for Understatement of the Decade:)...

Prof. Battig has great experience in the field of preventive medicine, which is a subject outside the Industry's competence.
