March 8, 2000 In the late 1960s and early 1970s, the information about the ill health effects of smoking prompted the Veterans Administration to eliminate sales of cigarette sales from VA hospitals. Letters to the editor appeared in newspapers across the country charging that "inhuman bureaucrats" were engaging in "sadistic treatment" of lonely veterans who have no other pleasures in life other than their cigarettes ( http://www.tobaccoinstitute.com/getallimg.asp?DOCID=TIMN0096567A).

The following handwritten note from one Tobacco Institute executive to another was clipped to a 1973 newspaper article entitled "Veteran's Hospital in Chicago bans sale of cigarets." Note the writer's total lack of concern for the health of hospitalized veterans.

In view of Rep. Gross' interest as expressed in the 7482 debate Monday, he might like to take on the VA cig sales ban movement. Would like to see someone keep the heat on to point up the stupidity of making it more difficult for hospitalized veterans to obtain cigarettes if they choose to smoke.
