Intro: As a result, based upon Office of the President (OP) guidance, the UCSD campus has established the following policy based upon a notice from the Chancellor dated April 29, 2008.
In accordance with RE-89, this policy requires that prior to submission of a proposal for research funding from the tobacco industry (or other tobacco entity):
* A scientific review committee composed of academic members with expertise in areas of science relevant to the proposal being submitted, will advise the UCSD Chancellor whether the proposed study uses sound methodology and whether it appears designed to allow the researcher to reach objective and scientifically valid conclusions.
* Also, please be aware that the Chancellor will issue a written determination approving or disapproving submission of the proposal, including a rationale of the determination. A copy of this determination will then be provided to the researcher, the UC President and The Regents.
OP has provided a preliminary list of companies and other entities that are considered part of and/or related to the tobacco industry.

Intro: MUNCIE -- Ball State Unviersity, which became a smoke-free campus more than four years ago, is considering becoming even more smoke free.
"We are smoke free, but we have places where people can smoke on the periphery of the campus," President Jo Ann Gora told the University Senate recently. "At this point, we have 11 places where people can smoke. And so the question is, are we really a smoke-free campus with that many places where people can smoke, and should we become more of a smoke-free campus and have fewer places to smoke."

Intro: Like other public and private institutions, UW-Stout has the right idea in discouraging students, employees and visitors from smoking. Not only is smoking inside workplaces illegal in Wisconsin, but the habit is harmful (even deadly) to smokers themselves and those who inhale secondhand smoke. Furthermore, the odor and litter from inconsiderate smokers don't do much for campus beautification.
However, UW-Stout is poised to take its zeal to stamp out smoking a step too far. Last week, campus officials announced plans to hire and train student "tobacco monitors" who, beginning next academic year, will patrol university property to enforce the campuswide smoking ban.

Intro: The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has directed schools and other educational institutions to stop the sale of tobacco and other tobacco products within 100 yards of any educational institutions and also to minors. The civic administration will now take stringent steps to ensure that no tobacco products are sold outside school and college campuses.
The BMC has directed that licence of all vendors, hawkers or shopkeepers found selling tobacco products near the vicinity of schools and colleges should be revoked.
