Intro: After Bill died, his brother and sister hired forensic engineers to figure out why the lighter blew up. The engineers created a video to show their findings.
According to them, the lighter had a defective seal. After it had been used, the defective seal allowed the butane to keep flowing. A small flame stayed lit, hidden by the wind guard. And when Bill put the lighter in his pocket, it exploded, giving him third degree burns.
Bill was using an MK lighter made in China.
The Consumer Product Safety Commission found that defective cigarette lighters caused nearly 1,000 injuries a year.

Intro: The assistant chief said the state fire marshal’s office investigated the fire Monday morning and found that the fire started in a garbage can in the “beer garden,” an outside area where patrons go to smoke.
Hale said it appears someone disposed of hot cigarette butts or emptied an ashtray into the garbage can, which was set against the wall of the building.

Al Tayer residents convinced carelessly thrown cigarette butt started fire; Officials yet to make statement on issue Jump to full article: Emirates 24|7 (ae), 2012-04-30 Author: * VM Sathish
Intro: Sharjah civic and fire officials have yet to release an official statement on the cause of the fire that destroyed the 40-storied Al Tayer building in Al Nahda, Sharjah.
However, the early consensus among officials and residents is that a single cigarette butt thrown carelessly on to a pile of paper cartons on the first floor started the blaze.
"While only a detailed forensic report will confirm this, residents are convinced that a cigarette butt was thrown carelessly on to a pile of paper cartons kept on the first floor of the building.
"A similar fire in the Al Bakr Tower 4 in Sharjah was also caused by a carelessly thrown out cigarette butt that affected the lives of hundreds of residents," one official said on the condition of anonymity .
If that is indeed proved correct, then it would be fair to say that a single cigarette butt destroyed hundreds of flats, displaced 2,500 residents and cost millions of dirhams in damages.
"It is unfortunate that such a silly act by a careless person has caused such huge damage," said a resident who did not wish to reveal his name.

Intro: MUNCIE -- Ball State Unviersity, which became a smoke-free campus more than four years ago, is considering becoming even more smoke free.
"We are smoke free, but we have places where people can smoke on the periphery of the campus," President Jo Ann Gora told the University Senate recently. "At this point, we have 11 places where people can smoke. And so the question is, are we really a smoke-free campus with that many places where people can smoke, and should we become more of a smoke-free campus and have fewer places to smoke."
