Intro: The Knesset's Health Committee has approved a wide-reaching addition to a law banning smoking in public places. The new protocol will ban smoking at public performances, swimming pools, inside roofed bus stops, and at train stations and central bus stations, with the exception of marked smoking areas. Bus drivers will not be allowed to smoke inside their vehicles before picking up passengers.
In addition, smoking will be prohibited within 10 meters of clinics and hospitals. In buildings where smoking is prohibited, smoking zones will not be allowed in stairwells or passageways.

Intro: Five years after Northern Ireland went smoke-free, drivers of work vehicles are still the biggest culprits when it comes to flouting the law, it has been revealed.
Today is the fifth anniversary of legislation banning smoking in the workplace, and in closed public spaces, as well as in vehicles such as taxis, buses, vans and lorries.
But while pubs and restaurants have shown a 98% compliance rate, Department of Health statistics have revealed some smokers are ignoring the law and lighting up behind the wheel while driving a work vehicle.

Intro: The Obama administration eased U.S. travel restrictions to Cuba by announcing last year it would grant licenses to selected travel companies to lead "people-to-people" tours to the Communist-led nation. The action meant Americans, who have been essentially prohibited from visiting the island for the past 50 years, could now travel to the country legally.
Alabama-based International Expeditions received a license and has begun offering 10-day tours of Cuba that start in June. As the name implies, "people-to-people" trips underscore interactions between Americans and locals, ones aimed at creating a dialog between residents of the two countries.
The itinerary includes discussions with botanists at the Soledad Botanical Garden, a visit to the Zapata Wetlands in search of bee hummingbirds and talks with farmers during a trip to a tobacco farm.

70 per cent of Driven to Quit Challenge winners are young adults Jump to full article: Canada Newswire (CNW) (ca), 2012-04-23 Author: CANADIAN CANCER SOCIETY (ONTARIO DIVISION)
Intro: Amy Ladouceur of Hamilton, Ontario, was awarded a new vehicle this morning for successfully quitting smoking in the Canadian Cancer Society Driven to Quit Challenge. Ladouceur was recognized by Martin Kabat, CEO of the Canadian Cancer Society, Ontario Division, at an official prize presentation.
Now in its seventh year and funded by the Government of Ontario, The Driven to Quit Challenge is a health promotion campaign that encourages Ontario tobacco users to make a quit attempt with the support of a "buddy" for their chance to win. Since 2006, The Driven to Quit Challenge has inspired more than 202,000 registrants to make a quit attempt. More than 37,000 of those participated in 2012 alone, marking a record year for The Challenge.
Ladouceur, 28, who works in the customer service industry, chose a new Ford Edge as her prize. She was joined by nine other winners, seven of whom are under the age of 35.
"We know that young adults have the highest smoking rate in the province," says Martin Kabat, CEO of the Canadian Cancer Society, Ontario Division. "So it is encouraging to see this many young adults making the effort to quit smoking. I'd like personally to congratulate not only our winners here today, but also the 37,400 entrants in this year's Driven to Quit Challenge."

Says government has 'a duty of care' to stop children from smoking Jump to full article: IrishCentral LLC (New York, NY), 2012-04-21 Author: DARA KELLY, IrishCentral.com Staff Writer
Intro: Irish Health Minister James Reilly says he will ban outdoor smoking in parks and on beaches to stop children seeing adults smoking. He also intends to ban smoking in cars with children present.
He made his plans public at the irish Heart Foundation conference on Friday, according to the Irish Examiner.
He stated he wanted to follow the lead of New York which bans smoking in city-owned public spaces. He will bring his plan to the cabinet shortly.
"We don't want children to see adults smoking in public areas. Areas where we would expect lots of children to be present, as in our public parks and on our beaches, should be smoke-free zones, and I will be putting a memo to Government to that effect."
He said 29 per cent of Irish adults still smoked a figure that was far too high. In New York he said that had been cut to 22 per cent.

Ex-smoker John Crown explains why he wants to ban smokers from lighting up inside cars with children present Jump to full article: Irish Independent (ie), 2012-04-15 Author: Senator John Crown
Intro: Such is the disordered thought process -- the "stinkin' thinkin'" of the addict. The overwhelming power of addiction must be borne in mind when considering the arguments of the opponents of anti-smoking regulations. Such opposition is now mobilising against the legislation that I, together with my colleagues, senators Mark Daly and Jillian van Turnhout, will be introducing into Seanad Eireann, legislation that -- by a simple short amendment to the existing smoking ban -- would extend it to include cars in which children are present.
