City Council Honoured for Effort Towards Smoking Control

Intro:

Maseru City Council (MCC) has received the World No tobacco Day 2001 Gold Medical and Certificate as a prize from the World Health Organisation's (WHO) in recognition of the Town clerk's remarkable contribution to tobacco control in his organisation and the country at large.

The award was presented to MCC by the resident Coordinator of WHO in Lesotho, Dr. Ruth Tshabalala.

Presenting the award to the Town Clerk, Mr. Paul Qobo, Dr Tshabalala, who passed it through Dr. Sekatle, noted that the office of the mayor had taken a bold step in participating in the 'Mayoral competition for Director General Award', by banning tobacco smoking in public premises within its jurisdiction.

He said the effort goes a long way to developing a smoke free work-place environment for the enhancement of a tobacco free nation. Dr. Tshabalala commended the Government of Lesotho for active participation in the formulation of the framework of commitment on tobacco control, banning of smoking in government buildings, and legislation that will cover the entire public places.

Tobacco Dangerous To Health, Youth Warned

Intro:

This was a drama played by the students of Mafeteng High School in a campaign intended to create awareness among the youth to stop smoking and abuse of drugs. According to the play that was one of the many activities of the celebration of the World No Tobacco Day at Maseru Sun Cabanas last week. During the occasion the Mafeteng Hospital visited the students to advise them on the dangers of the substances abuse.
