Validity of self-reported smoking among women hospital staff in Tunisia

Jump to full article: Tobacco Control, 2010-09-29

Intro:

In Tunisia, smoking prevalence is high1 (55.6% males vs 5.2% females).2 However, under-reporting of smoking may occur, particularly among women from cultures where social proscriptions still exist.3 No studies on women's smoking have been published in Tunisia which have validated self-reported smoking with biomarkers such as urinary cotinine.4

We aimed to assess the validity of self-reported smoking among female staff in a Tunisian hospital.

Our data were extracted from a cross-sectional study5 conducted between January and May 2005 to assess smoking behaviours of the health professional staff at Charles Nicolle Hospital in Tunis, the largest University Hospital in Tunisia.

A workshop was held on Tuesday, in Tunis at the initiative of the Tunisian Agriculture and Fisheries Union (UTAP) chaired by Mr. Mabrouk El Bahri, the Union's chairman, on the theme "Reality and prospects of tobacco cultivation in Tunisia".

According to statistics released on this occasion, tobacco cultivation covers 1, 266 hectares, employs 80,000 people (farmers, at tobacconists) and produces 16, 55 tons according to 2009 figures.

Mr. El Bahri stressed the importance of tobacco farming in the reduction of imports and the supervision of farmers of this product in the countryside as well as the setting up of a partnership between the Tobacco Board and UTAP. . . .

Tunisia observes 2010 World No Tobacco Day

Intro:

Similarly to the rest of the world , Tunisia observed on May 31, 2010, the World No Tobacco Day 2010, on the theme “Gender and tobacco, with an emphasis on marketing tobacco to women”, chosen by the World Health Organization (WHO).

Tunisia chose to celebrate this day under the motto “girls and boys without tobacco”, stressing this year, the adverse effects of marketing tobacco among women and young girls, and calling to forbid any form of advertisement that could encourage women to smoke.

Controlling the epidemic of tobacco among women is an important part of any comprehensive tobacco control strategy. World No Tobacco Day 2010 will be designed to focus on the harmful effects of tobacco marketing towards women and girls, as well as the need for the nearly 170 Parties to the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (WHO FCTC) to ban all tobacco advertising, promotion and sponsorship in accordance with their constitutional principles.

A coffee and a smoke in Tunis

Smoking ban? Not in the cafes of Tunisia's capital, where you can indulge your love for the shisha
Jump to full article: Times Of London (uk), 2008-02-23

Intro:

CIGARETTE? Not for me, thanks. But a waterpipe - or shisha - is a different proposition.

The deliciously smooth and exotic mix of tobacco and molasses filtered through water fills me with a longing to be, just for a second, on the sunlit streets of Damascus, Marrakesh, Cairo or Tunis.

I love the shisha - its sturdy, curving base, thin stem, charcoal holder and the tongs that go with it. In Tunis last summer for an Arabic course, I was soon ordering wahad shisha tufair, an apple shisha, as naturally as I would a cup of coffee.

Back in London, on the Edgware Road, the city's "Little Beirut", I had enjoyed the ritual of sharing a waterpipe with friends after work, savouring the delirious head rush at the end of a long day. . . .

Back in Tunis, I could spend a lifetime touring the capital's cafés - indeed many local men do. Away from Avenue Bourguiba, the modern city centre, Tunisian women are rarely seen smoking, but tourists generally can puff away with impunity.

The medina contains some lovely old cafés, many in states of considerable decay. I had a smoking session and lengthy discussion with a muezzin from the local mosque near Bab Jazira in Montfleury

The prevalence of daily smoking (both sexes combined) was 4.5% among first year students and 16.7% among final year students. The prevalence of daily smoking according to sex was 29.6% among boys and 0.7% among girls. Over 90% of students thought smoking was harmful to health, but there was considerable underestimation of its causal role in a number of diseases, notably coronary heart disease, bladder cancer and peripheral vascular disease. There were important defects in both knowledge and motivation regarding counselling patients to stop smoking.

CONCLUSIONS: The results of this study may provide baseline data to develop an anti-smoking programme in the university.
