No place for tobacco and alcohol in free trade: health minsters told

Vanuatu has won the bid to host the 2007 South Pacific health minister's meeting. The current meeting was held last week in Samoa and health minister Morking Steven was there alongside his Pacific counterparts.

One issue on the agenda was concern over free trade agreements and their influence on tobacco and alcohol use, according to Dr Harley Stanton, health promotion adviser of the Secretariat of the Pacific Community (SPC), which coordinated the conference with the World Health Organisation.

"A major paper commissioned by SPC recommends that Pacific Island countries exclude tobacco and alcohol from the Pacific Island Countries Trade Agreement, and leave countries free to maintain appropriately high levels of tariff or taxation as a public health measure," he said.
