'Aussie smoking deaths on NZ hands'

Jump to full article: AAP (Australian Associated Press) (au), 2012-03-26
Author: AAP

Intro:

New Zealanders will effectively be responsible for the deaths of thousands of Australians with a tobacco factory sending up to four billion cigarettes across the ditch, an anti-smoking lobby group says.

Imperial Tobacco's Petone factory is quadrupling its exports to Australia, adding 50 manufacturing jobs and completing a two-year, $45 million upgrade.

Action on Smoking and Health (ASH) director Ben Youdan said New Zealanders could be taking responsibility for a considerable number of deaths in Australia.

The cigarettes would be smoked by about 100,000 Australians, about half of who would die prematurely from tobacco, he told NZ Newswire.

"I think it's quite shameful that's a responsibility that's being dumped on New Zealand by Imperial."

The Resurrected Beatrice Inn: Expect Cozy and Smoke-Free

Jump to full article: Wall Street Journal Blogs, 2012-03-23
Author: Mike Vilensky - Metropolis - WSJ

Intro:

In the heady days of New York nightlife circa 2008, the Beatrice Inn, an Italian restaurant-turned-sardine-tin-nightclub, was the default West Village boite for “Page Six”-caliber starlets, enterprising NYU students, and fashion types. Now defunct, the Beatrice Inn is currently being revamped by Vanity Fair editor and Monkey Bar owner Graydon Carter, who said he’s aiming to reopen the spot as a chophouse in five weeks. . . .

He will not keep one of the Beatrice Inn’s most famed amenities (or nuisances, depending on your sensibility): indoor smoking.

“Not in this city!” said Carter, who has in the past published jeremiads against New York City’s anti-smoking laws. “You can’t get a license for that, unfortunately. I probably would if I could.”

Todd Mahr: Anti-smoking campaign is great public service

Jump to full article: Capital Newspapers (madison.com), 2012-03-23
Author: Todd Mahr

Intro:

Dear Editor: The Center for Disease Control has launched the “Tips From Former Smokers” national ad campaign that depicts the harsh reality of what real people suffer as a result of smoking and exposure to secondhand smoke. In these ads, former smokers bravely expose their smoking-related disabilities on advertisements that will run heavily between March and June.

We feel the impact of smoking-related diseases here, too. More than 7,200 Wisconsinites die from smoking-related diseases every year, leaving behind families, friends and lives. At the same time, each day 1,000 Americans under the age of 18 begin smoking.
