• Lorillard, Liggett in Talks to Settle NY Suits, Lawyer Says 

Loews Corp.'s Lorillard Inc. and Vector Group Ltd.'s Liggett Group Inc. are negotiating to settle tobacco lawsuits pending in federal court in New York, said Norwood Wilner, an attorney involved in the talks.

Lorillard, controlled by New York's Tisch family, is following the lead of Liggett CEO Bennett LeBow in breaking ranks with Philip Morris Cos., R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Holdings Inc. and British American Tobacco's Brown & Williamson unit. . .

``The fact that Lorillard is sitting down with us is historic,'' said Wilner . . .

Wilner said Liggett and Lorillard, the No. 4 U.S. cigarette maker, ``are not actually working together.''

Current negotiations are targeted at settling 10 separate cases pending before U.S. District Judge Jack Weinstein
