A Clute woman has filed what is believed to be the first lawsuit brought by a Brazoria County individual against the major American tobacco companies for the severe injuries and diseases she suffered as a result of smoking.
Korliss Kay Hodges and her husband, Clute City Councilman Harold Hodges, are seeking unspecified damages from 17 defendants, including R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co., Philip Morris Inc. and other companies collectively known as Big Tobacco.
The lawsuit, filed Tuesday in Angleton, has been assigned to the court of District Judge J. Ray Gayle III.
