Intro: At issue * April 2 commentary by Sen. Paul Hornback and Rep. Wilson Stone, "Plans to exclude tobacco from trade pact unfair to state."
The commentary that objected to the Herald-Leader's editorial board's support of the proposed carveout of tobacco from the Trans-Pacific Partnership Agreement, known as TPPA, contained misleading information that requires clarification.
Contrary to the implication in the commentary, a tobacco carveout would not apply exclusively to U.S. tobacco, let alone Kentucky tobacco.
TPPA removes tariffs and trade barriers that operate among the partnering countries. A tobacco carveout would apply equally to all tobacco within the TPPA free-trade zone. Removing tobacco from the agreement will not disadvantage U.S. or Kentucky tobacco relative to exports from other countries. It will simply leave tobacco products from all countries in the same competitive position they are in today.

Intro: It has been exactly one year since Bowling Green’s smoking ordinance went into effect, causing restaurants and bars in the city to put up their ashtrays and smokers at those establishments to put away their lighters.
The ordinance, which bans smoking at most private businesses in the city, went into effect on April 28, 2011.
A year later, the sponsor of the ordinance – Commissioner Brian “Slim” Nash – said opinions are still split on whether the ordinance was a good idea.
“While I believe a majority of people support it and a majority of people wanted it, I’m not so foolish as to try to deny that it’s controversial,” Nash said of the ordinance.

Intro: How ironic. The front page of the Friday paper features how Rep. John Tilley takes great pride in his legislation to control drugs, and the Oak Grove police raid the sellers of synthetic drugs and seize everything — and both of these lead stories surround a color picture of how we go to great pains to grow tobacco. Only in Kentucky and only in the New Era.

Intro: I’m writing in response to James Barone’s letter in Monday’s paper about the tobacco photograph on Page A1 of Friday’s paper. It’s a sad day when the tobacco industry is lauded while it is responsible for most of the respiratory diseases and all cancers. And sadly Kentuckians rank the highest in these!! Only in Kentucky and only in the New Era.
