A farm workers union based in Ohio says it will help lead a discussion about the conditions and rights of workers who cut and harvest tobacco in North Carolina.

The Farm Labor Organizing Committee said it will sit down with tobacco growers and several large tobacco manufacturers to talk about wages and working conditions for the field workers.

Intro:

Taxing not only drives up cost, but it discourages smoking and creates revenue for prevention and treatment, says Shelly Kiser of the American Lung Association.

The lung association is pushing for an additional $1.25 tax per pack in Ohio. As of now, no bill sponsor appears to be stepping forward.

Kiser is quick to point out that Ohio brings in about $1 billion each year in revenue from the existing cigarette tax and spends no money on prevention programs. The additional tax would net another $347 million each year that the legislature could use for anything, she said, including prevention efforts.

If I cannot have a nonsmoking break in the workplace, then please discontinue the permission of short breaks for smokers.

According to the American Lung Association, smoking costs Ohio’s economy $9.2 billion per year. Maybe, Ohio, if you prohibit smoke breaks in the workplace, that would motivate smokers to quit smoking and lower the economic burden. You have improved the health of your nonsmoking Ohioans, so either show the same kindness to the smoking Ohioans or give me a break.
