Cancer will affect 11,300 West Virginians this year.

That is a number that Gov. Bob Wise and nearly 100 volunteer cancer advocates and survivors lobbied Thursday to prevent from increasing. And as a survivor of prostate cancer himself, Wise did not hold back.

"There is really no excuse," he said, when advocating the simple procedures used to detect cancer. "I am fascinated by all of the excuses we make for not doing it."

Members of the American Cancer Society pinned Wise, who was diagnosed and had has prostate cancer surgery in 1999, and many other cancer survivors with ribbons in honor of their fight for survival. And every one of them is fighting for an increase in the antiquated tobacco tax, which hasn't been touched since 1978.
