Doubling cigarette taxes is a top choice for raising money to fund teacher pay raises, Gov. Kathleen Blanco said Thursday.

"We are looking at cigarettes first because it generates more money and it will stop people from smoking," said Blanco.

The governor said she needs to find a source of money for a $1,000 pay raise.

Increasing taxes on a 20-cigarette pack from the current 36-cents to 72-cents would generate between $70 million and $80 million -- enough to deliver the $1,000 pay hike she has promised, Blanco said.

Blanco said her financial experts are also examining a 50-cent scenario.
