DuPage considers benefits of possible county cigarette tax

A $1-a-pack tax on cigarettes could produce $40 million a year in revenue for DuPage County government, the county's finance chief said Tuesday.

That revenue would be far more than enough to fill the budget shortfall, which prompted the county to raise its real estate tax levy this year by $2.6 million. It was the county government's first property tax increase in a decade.

"Obviously, it's a substantial potential revenue source," said County Board Chairman Robert Schillerstrom.

But officials cautioned that the county is a few big steps away from collecting a cigarette tax. Getting permission from the state legislature to impose the tax would be one step. Making a decision at the County Board level to impose it would be another.
