Competition and a partial smoking ban continued to batter the Atlantic City casinos, causing revenue to decline 5.9 percent in August, typically one of the strongest months of the year.

According to the New Jersey Casino Control Commission, the 11 casinos reported revenue of $465.2 million in August. Slot revenue declined 11 percent, to $323.5 million, while table game revenue increased 8.2 percent, to $141.7 million.
