School girls resort to smoking

MINISTER of Health Benedict Xaba says school going girls as young as 13 have resorted to smoking.

The minister says this is a cause for concern, which has been revealed during a survey conducted by his ministry with support from World Health Organisation (WHO).

“The results give us another dimension of the public health challenges we face as a nation.

Hence prevention of tobacco use by our youth is one of our priorities,” he said.

Speaking during the commemoration of World No Tobacco Day yesterday at St. Michael’s High School, Xaba said it was for this reason that government had been looking at ways of strengthening policies and regulations to control the use of tobacco.
