Sherry Brooks from Tobacco Free Allegheny asked borough council at its meeting Tuesday night to prohibit the use of tobacco in borough parks.

"It's no secret the dangers of secondhand smoke to children," she said.

She said Tobacco Free Allegheny has free signs for communities that create tobacco free zones in public parks, and has available resources and information for people who want to quit smoking.

"Not only is this an important public health initiative, but it helps to keep parks clean from debris," Ms. Brooks said.

The borough council will take up the proposal at its next workshop meeting in April.
