Intro: When the smoke cleared following Tuesday’s municipal election, voters in Hannibal let it be known they don’t want to encounter smoky conditions in public spaces. Voters approved Proposition 1 by an overall margin of 1,653-1,309.
“I feel good about that,” said Dr. Richard Draper, who as a member of the city council sought to have the proposal placed before voters. “I feel the citizens of Hannibal have made their choice and I’m proud of them. I’m proud.”
While Prop 1 was voted down in Ralls County by a 13-11 margin, it gained overwhelming support in the Marion County portion of Hannibal where it received almost 56 percent of the vote.
Draper was surprised by the margin of victory.
“I thought it would be a lot closer than that,” he said.
Draper believes the proposal was important to people who have become more health conscious.
“I think the facts spoke for themselves.
